On 7th April, 1970 a meeting was convened in the secretariat by Sri Raveendran, the Hon. Minister for Industries, Labour and Sports for improving the standard of sports in Kerala. Representatives of different sports and games association, experts of the field and persons who are interested in sports and games attended the meeting. The meeting decided to constitute a committee to plan and implement various schemes for the promotion of sports in the state of Kerala. Accordingly, a sub committee was formed with Justice V R Krishna Ayyar as the Chairman. The committee studied the Sports scenario of Kerala and submitted a comprehensive report for the development and promotion of Sports in Kerala. For that it was recommended to start Sport Hostels, Sports, Schools, and Sports Divisions with the sole purpose of identifying and nurturing of Sports potential at a very young stage.

The G.V Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala was established in 1974-75. The contributions of Lt. Col. P. R. Godha Varma Raja, the father of Sports in Kerala is memorable and to mark respect to his efforts the first school for nurturing sports talent in Kerala was named after him as Govt. G.V. Raja Sports School. Well known sports personalities like Olympian Shiny Wilson, Olympian K.M Beenamol and present Indian Hockey Team Captain Olympian P.R Sreejesh are some of the alumni of this esteemed institution.

The Govt. G.V Raja Sports School is a mixed school with classes ranging from 8th to 10th currently under General Education department (DPI) and 11th and 12th in Vocational Higher Secondary scheme Physical Education and Sports science under V.H.S.E directorate. Hence there are two staff patterns. Here there are three division in high school section (30 students x 3 division x 3 classes = 270 students). In V.H.S.E there are two batches (30 students x 2 batch x 2 class (+1, +2) = 120 students). The total school strength = 390 students.

At present there are 390 students in our school and they are engaged in seven different disciplines like Athletics, Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket and Taekwondo. Most of our students are national medalists. Our ultimate aim is to produce international medal winners from our institution. To achieve this goal the basic infrastructure should be developed and for that our institution is in need of emergency help from the department.
