of Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala. It is a well known fact that
keralites are deeply interested in Sports and Games, especially in football.
'Healthy Kids' aims to enhance physical and mental
abilities of children by initiating them to sports and games.The primary focus is to help the
children devolop aptitude in a variety of games which could later be harnessed through
systematic andscientific training.
HOOPS’ would be a great first step in moving towards
India’s participation in FIBA at a higher level. The programme would be structured in a way that
ensure the overall growth of kids in all the aspects related to basketball which in turn

Athletics is one of the prioritized sports
disciplines
in Keralabased on the performance at National and International level. For performance
enhancement, training at grass root level across the state , with interschool and inter
district
tournaments has to be more.
Judoka is a state-wide grassroots training program for
school students between age group of 8-11 years by establishing basic training centres in the
State. JUDOKA was introduced to lay a better foundation for the promotion of Judo in the
state.
Anju Bobby George won bronze in long jump in the World Athletic Championship at Paris in 2003- the first medal for India in the championship. Anju also won gold in the world athletic final in 2005. She was the first Indian lady to secure a medal in the commonwealth games (bronze in 2002);
K.M.Beenamol was the first Rajeev Gandhi Khel Ratna Award winner from Kerala ( 2002).;
Shiny Wilson was the first lady who could be the flag bearer of India in the Olympics (1992 Barcelona).;
P.T.Usha won 4 gold and 1 silver in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games - the best ever achievement of an Indian athlete. Won 4th in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Honoured as the best sports woman of India and Kerala of the 20th century.;
M.D.Valsamma was the first Padma shri sportsperson from Kerala and also the first lady from South India to secure a gold medal in the Asian Games.;
Jimmy George, the youngest winner of Arjuna Award in volleyball and the first professional volleyball player of India, he was considered one of the best 10 attackers of the world in 1980s. Honoured as the best sportsman of Kerala of the 20th century, Italians honoured him by making a new Indoor Stadium in his memory in Brescia, a rare honour to an Indian Sportsman.;
T.C.Yohannan won gold in long jump in the 1974 Tehran Asian Games with a record of 8.07 mtrs. The first Keralite to create an Asian record and also the first Indian to cross 8 mtrs in long jump.;
Kerala Football Team won Santhosh Trophy for the first time in 1973 - football is the most popular sport in the world.;
Manuel Fredricks won bronze in hockey in the 1972 Munich Olympics - the first Keralite to secure an Olympic medal.;
Suresh Babu was the first athlete from Kerala to secure a medal in the Commonwealth Games - bronze in 1978, Edmonton.;
